Remembering David Carr
What you need to know: David Carr, celebrated New York Times journalist and singular voice in cultural criticism, passed away last night at the age of 58. A brilliant, radical presence in media journalism, Carr spearheaded the Times’ popular Media Equation column, in which he boldly explored the intersection between everyday media, popular culture, and mass technology. Carr was also a fierce and fearless chronicler of his own life’s heartbreaking hurtles and remarkable rise, as recorded in his acclaimed 2008 memoir The Night of the Gun.
Tribeca Says: David Carr was a cherished friend and committed supporter of Tribeca Film. He attended every kick-off event, numerous screenings, and moderated panels for the Festival. He was an encouraging friend to fledgling talents, a tireless advocate for unconventional films, and an avid champion of storytelling in any form. He rooted for us. We rooted for him.
British Broad City
What you need to know: Ackee & Saltfish, a short by British director Cecile Emeke, generated a good amount of buzz last year when the trailer was released. The short film has finally debuted and is now available for streaming. Olivia and Rachel, the main characters, explore topics of friendship, gentrification, social responsibility, and cultural appropriation through their witty banter and antics. The short is being likened to America's new favorite series, Broad City.
Tribeca says: We will be plating the name game for the rest of the day.
Extended Scene from 'Birdman'
What you are watching: Fox Searchlight released an extended version of a scene from 'Birdman' in which Riggan Thompson (Michael Keaton) confronts the spikey theater critic, Tabitha Dickinson (Lindsay Duncan), who can make or break his play's reception at a bar. With Oscar hype soaring, this could not come at a more exciting time.
Tribeca says: We cannot get enough of this movie and the performances of these actors.
5 Second Music Video
What you are watching: A music video filmed in 5 seconds with a high speed camera that captures 1000 frames per second. The footage was then slowed down to reveal 3.5 minutes of a dream-like series of interactions between the 80 actors involved in the shoot. The end result is set to French musician, Siska's, 'Unconditional Rebel'.
Tribeca says: A refreshing look at what you can do with a camera and just a few seconds.
New Spike Lee
What you need to know: We've seen plenty of vampiric lovers fighting addiction over the past few years, and Spike Lee's emergence in this dialogue will be interesting to observe. 'Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a Valentine's Day movie alternative to Fifty Shades if you're looking for one.
