TFF Alums Score 2015 Oscar Nominations: See Full List

Congratulations to the stellar teams behind ‘Virunga’ and ‘The Phone Call.’

We’re pleased to report that two TFF 2014 alumni will be headed to Hollywood this February! Lauded filmmakers J.J Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron read out a few familiar names this morning, much to the delight of all of us at the TFF offices.

Virunga, directed by Orlando von Einsiedel, is one of the five films nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category at the 87th Academy Awards. The film, which celebrated its world premiere at last year’s Festival, is available to watch through Netflix right at this very minute. The nomination for Virunga marks the second Oscar recognition for the groundbreaking streaming service.

The Phone Call, directed by Mat Kirkby, is among the five films nominated in the Best Live-Action Short category. Featuring the talents of Sally Hawkins and Jim Broadbent, this moving short won the TFF 2014 prize for Best Narrative Short back in April. Watch the short again (or for the first time!) right here.

Our friends at Tribeca Film Institute also have reason to celebrate! The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund-supported The Imitation Game collected 8 nominations including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing for Morten Tyldum and Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch. TFI alum Damien Chazelle (Guy and Madeline On A Park Bench, TFF 2009) sophomore feature, Whiplash, recieved a total of 5 nominations including Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Don’t forget to tune into the 2015 Oscars ceremony, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, on February 22nd to root for two standouts from TFF 2014! See complete list of nominations below.
