MY BEST FRIEND

Drama, Comedy

Prolific French director Patrice Leconte takes a witty yet thoughtful look at the meaning of friendship in this amusing spin on the buddy film. François (Daniel Auteuil) is a high-powered antiques dealer obsessed by the prized objects he collects, and the underhanded tactics used to attain them. His life appears to be a blur of auctions, galleries, business meetings and dinners, completely devoid of intimate relationships- including those with his daughter and girlfriend. On the occasion of his birthday dinner, François is chided by business partner Catherine (Julie Gayet) about not having real friends. He is shocked and quickly points to the table filled with people, but it is abundantly clear that each is a colleague with very little affection for him. Incredulous, François claims that he has many other close relationships, but Catherine calls his bluff and bets that he cannot produce one real friend in 10 days. If she is right, then he must give up a valued Greek vase. This sets François off on an absurd quest to dig into his past, and his rolodex, in search of someone to fill the role. In the midst of one failed attempt after another, he meets taxi driver Bruno (Dany Boon). Although annoyed by his simple, friendly banter and quirky spouting of trivia, François realizes that Bruno naturally possesses the warmth and ability to befriend strangers- just the skill that Francois requires. After enlisting Bruno's help, he quickly understands that learning the art of empathy and sincerity is far more difficult than he ever imagined. An IFC Films Release.
