THOUGHT CRIMES
Female Director(s), Documentary, NY Director(s)
NYPD officer Gilberto Valle rose to infamy after being convicted for conspiring to kidnap, rape, kill and eat several women. Valle, “The Cannibal Cop” was now looking at a life sentence for his Internet searches and online activities. His sexual fantasies cost him his family, his job, and his freedom–but it also prompted a fundamental question: can you be guilty of a crime you only thought of committing? Erin Lee Carr takes a gritty look into the darkest corners of the human psyche. With exclusive access to Valle and his family, Carr challenges our beliefs about the criminal justice system especially as it applies to the ever-evolving digital platform. When it comes to the Internet, how do you draw the line between fantasy and reality? At what point are the desires of a potentially dangerous man criminal? And how do you know when that line has been crossed?
