TRIBECA TALKS DIRECTORS SERIES: CARY FUKUNAGA WITH JAMES SCHAMUS

Cary Fukunaga, the acclaimed director of Indie darlings such as Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre as well as recent TV hit “True Detective,” will discuss the success of his award-winning works for both the big screen and television with producer/screenwriter James Schamus.

Cary Fukunaga
Cary Joji Fukunaga graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His film work as a writer, director, and cinematographer has taken him from the Arctic Circle to Haiti and West Africa. His first feature film, Sin Nombre, premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, earning him the Directing Award and the Excellence in Cinematography Award. He also directed Jane Eyre in 2011 and, most recently, the acclaimed first season of True Detective for HBO, for which he earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

James Schamus
Dr. James Schamus is an award-winning screenwriter (The Ice Storm), producer (Brokeback Mountain), and former CEO of Focus Features, the motion picture production, financing, and worldwide distribution company whose films have included Moonrise Kingdom, Milk, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Kids are All Right, The Pianist, Coraline, and The Dallas Buyers Club. A professor of Professional Practice in Columbia University’s School of the Arts, Dr. Schamus teaches film history and theory. He is the author of Carl Theodor Dreyer's Gertrud: The Moving Word, published by the University of Washington Press. He earned his BA, MA, and Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley.
