Drama

In the final months of King Henry VIII's (Jude Law) reign, his sixth wife, Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), navigates the treacherous waters of the Tudor court. As a champion of radical change, Parr's progressive beliefs and courage put her at odds with the ailing and increasingly paranoid monarch. When Henry appoints her as Regent during his absence, Parr's newfound power threatens the courtiers who scheme against her, casting doubt on her fidelity to the King.

Firebrand is a compelling historical drama that sheds light on the often overlooked story of Katherine Parr. Alicia Vikander delivers a nuanced performance as the intelligent and determined Queen, while Jude Law's portrayal of the volatile Henry VIII is a scene-stealing highlight. With sumptuous visuals, a taut script and a talented supporting cast, including Simon Russell Beale, Eddie Marsan and Sam Riley, director Karim Aïnouz crafts a gripping tale of ambition, survival and the struggle for power in a world that sees no value in an intelligent woman.––Jarod Neece
