Back and better than ever, Broadway is opening its curtains and to celebrate we are bringing together Award-winning actors Cytnhia Erivo and André De Shields to discuss the forthcoming documentary entitled Back to Broadway (TIME Studios) from director Jamila Ephron. During this intimate conversation moderated by Zach Stafford, the duo will go in depth on how issues of race, identity, and labor impact the lives of the people responsible for making New York City the mecca for dreamers and artists around the world.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo is a Grammy® Emmy® and Tony® Award-winning actress, singer, author, and producer, as well as an Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, and SAG nominee. Since bursting onto the West End and Broadway stages in “The Color Purple,” she has taken the world by storm. Erivo is set to star as Elphaba opposite Ariana Grande’s Glinda in Universal’s highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit musical WICKED from director Jon M. Chu. Part 1 of WICKED will be released on November 27th, 2024, with Part 2 released on November 26th, 2025. She can recently be seen starring in Disney+’s PINOCCHIO as the Blue Fairy opposite Tom Hanks, Keegan Michael Key and Luke Evans and LUTHER where she will starred alongside Idris Elba and Andy Serkis in the feature film installment, which continues the story of the acclaimed BBC crime series. Erivo can currently be seen starring in DRIFT, which Erivo produces with her production company Edith’s Daughter. DRIFT follows a young Liberian refugee named Jacqueline (Erivo) who has barely escaped her war-torn country to a Greek island. The film had its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22nd, 2023 and opened to rave reviews. Erivo also wrote and recorded an original song for the film entitled “It Would Be.”

Andrè De Shields

In a career spanning more than half a century, André De Shields has acquired a number of sobriquets, among them: "Broadway Deity," "Professional Charmer" and "Papa Dré." A showstopper at age 76, André was the triple-crown winner of the 2019 award season, garnering Tony, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Grammy Awards for his universally praised role as Hermes, Messenger to the Gods, in Hadestown.
