Free Flick Fridays:<br>Gunnin' for that #1 Spot

We love you, Adam Yauch, and we hope you're feeling better soon! After all, this erstwhile Beastie Boy has a knack for film distribution (Oscilloscope rules) and heartening docs about elite high school b-ballers. Check it out!

Gunnin'

Gunnin' for that #1 Spot

Dir. Adam Yauch (2008)

The world was bummed out to hear that Adam Yauch, otherwise known as MCA of the legendary hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has a "very treatable" cancerous tumor in his salivary gland. It means no Beastie Boys tour dates this summer (they had to pull out of their headlining slot at this weekend's All Points West with Jay-Z stepping in) and their new album will be delayed.

Yauch has other irons in the fire besides his music; in the past year, as founder and company head of Oscilloscope Pictures, he's been a nascent figure in the world of indie film, putting out critically acclaimed must-sees like Wendy and Lucy, Dear Zachary, Treeless Mountain, his own doc, Gunnin' for that #1 Spot, and much more. It's an incredible slate that's impeccably curated. Oscilloscope stated, "founder and company head [Adam Yauch] expects to be back at work after a brief absence." We're all rooting for you!

If you haven't seen Gunnin' for that #1 Spot, which premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, now's a good time to check it out. (It's not his first work behind the camera, keep in mind that this is Nathaniel Hornblower we're talking about.) Like the best of documentaries, it takes you into a world you may not have known about, following elite high school basketball players at the "Elite 24" tournament in Harlen's Rucker Park. Expect some endearing future NBA stars in their puppy years and sweet, sweet basketball moves. Awesome!
