ESPN’s beloved documentary series, 30 for 30, has taken audiences inside some of the greatest stories in sports and some you probably hadn’t even heard of). While the program has highlighted the compelling journeys of Marion Jones and Renee Richards, female athletes have been woefully underrepresented until now.

In cooperation with AT&T, ESPN and ESPNW have teamed up to present Nine for IX, a new series comprised of nine films by women about women athletes who came along after the Title IX became law. Executive produced by Robin Roberts and Tribeca’s own Jane Rosenthal, several of these fascinating documentaries celebrated their world premiere at this year’s Festival.

Pat XO chronicles Pat Summit’s extraordinary life from the point of view of the people that know her best. Directed by Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters and produced by Roberts herself, the film offers a compelling (but never saccharine sweet) tribute to the winningest coach in the history of NCAA basketball as she begins her fight against Altzheimer’s disease.

The series, which runs from July 2 to August 27, kicked off with Venus Vs., the documentary by director Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere, This is the Life) about Venus Williams’ two-year long campaign (2005-2007) to get female tennis players the same amount of prize money at Wimbledon as the male players. Three more TFF 2013 documentaries—Let Them Wear Towels, No Limits and The Diplomat—will also have their cable television premieres this summer.

Check the official website for the schedules and see what other female athletes (such as WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes, runner Mary Decker, and soccer star Julie Foudy) will be profiled in the inaugural season of Nine for IX.
