This weekend's mostly-free events in NYC include a "secret" movie screening at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, 'Inception' outdoors, and 'Footloose' at midnight. Kick off your Sunday shoes!

Summer Fridays: 'Footloose,' 'Inception' & Brooklyn Comedy

Summer may be winding down, but that doesn't mean there aren't tons of free or affordable festivals, screenings and outdoor events for you to attend in NYC! 

Friday, August 23:

Comedy As a Second Language
Brick Theater at 11PM (doors open at 10PM)
Ticket: $5

Hailed by Time Out New York as a staple of the Brooklyn Comedy Festival, this event will be hosted by Chelsea Clay Calloway and will feature local comics Myq Kaplan, Nick Turner, Rob Cantrell, Josh Gondelman, Aparna Nancherla, Neal Stastny, Jim Tews, Scotland Green, and special guests. Free Brooklyn Brewery beer and Tito's Handmade Vodka will be served as well!

The Servant
Film Forum at 7:30PM and 9:40PM
Ticket: $12.50

Playwright Harold Pinter's story comes to life in this 60s Brit-cinema classic starring Dirk Bogarde and James Fox. When Tony (James Fox) hires Barrett (Dirk Bogarde) as his new butler, he expects his estate to be brought back to tip-top shape, but when Barrett's "sister" comes to visit, the social standings of the house's occupants slowly begin to blur, until Tony finds himself in a place he never expected.

Diablo Love
East River Park at 8PM
Ticket: Free

This musical uses songs from Blues icon Howlin' Wolf and original compositions by Tomas Doncker to tell the tale of Baliel, a lost soul who must find someone to switch places with him or spend eternity in Hell. He quickly finds Emma, a struggling gospel singer from Harlem who dreams of bigger and better things. But as he promises her fame and wealth in the hopes of tricking her into taking his spot, he slowly begins to fall in love with her, which threatens to ruin everything. 

Saturday, August 24:

Rockaway Beach Surf Club Grand Re-Opening Party/Secret Screening:

The RBSC is finally reopening after Sandy, and to thank the volunteers who helped (and are still helping) to rebuild the Rockaways, they've teamed up with TFF to offer three free screenings in celebration. These screenings will be offered at sunset in Queens at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, located at 302 Beach 87th St. The first one is Saturday, August 24th, and it's a secret, but the theme is "Bikers" to celebrate those who pedaled miles to help in the days and weeks after Sandy. 

Inception Outdoor Screening

Southpoint Park, 6PM (movie starts at 8:30-8:45PM)
Ticket: Free

As part of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation,revisiting the 2010 Christopher Nolan smash-hit Inception is a perfect way to spend one of the last Saturdays of summer outdoors. 

Fort Greene Park Summer Literary Festival 
Fort Green Park Monument (Rain location: Queen of All Saints Church) at 2PM Ticket: Free

The New York Writers Coalition presents this 9th annual festival, featuring readings from member of their summer youth workshops and Brooklyn-based authors such as Angel Nafis, Chris Adrian, Timothy Small and Jackson Taylor -- who are also part of the Writer's Foundry. It's bound to be an inspirational afternoon for any aspiring writer!

Footloose 
Landmark Sunshine Cinema at Midnight
Ticket: $13.50

What better movie for a midnight screening is there than Footloose? Come watch Kevin Bacon dance and sing his heart out in his iconic breakout role!


Sunday, August 25:

AFROPUNK FEST
Commodore Barry Park at 12PM
Ticket: Free, but the $25 suggested donation guarantees admission for Fast Pass entry. Must RSVP.

The 9th annual AFROPUNK FEST is an event that can't be missed, and has been dubbed "the most multicultural festival in the US" by The New York Times. Performers include Big Freedia, Mykki Blanco, Danny Brown, Jean Grae, Chuck D, Vintage Trouble, The Heavy, Trash Talk and more, with genres ranging from hip-hop to punk to blues. But that's not all: the event also includes a variety of food trucks, a free skate park, a market, and a custom bike show. 

A Raisin in the Sun
BAM Rose Cinemas at 2:00PM, 4:30PM, 7PM, 9:45PM
Ticket: $13

Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee star in this 1961 American cinema milestone, as it was adapted from Lorraine Hansberry's play, which was the first play by a female African-American playwright to ever grace a Broadway stage. And after so many years, the story remains timeless, as it deals with one family's struggle to make ends meet -- where some members just want to put food on the table and others yearn for something more entirely.

Battle of Brooklyn Day
Green-Wood Cemetary at 12:30PM
Ticket: Free, Must RSVP

If you've never been to a war re-enactment before, this is the one to attend! Watch the Battle of Brooklyn before your very eyes and meet the soldiers and famous colonial Americans. Afterwards, there'll be a parade and ceremony to commemorate the 237th anniversary of this important Revolutionary War moment.
