WHAT TO WATCH: NEWLYWEDS Friday at 10:00 p.m. on MSG Network
Just in time for the dog days of summer movie watching, MSG Network has partnered with Tribeca Film for Tribeca Film Presents, a special summer-long event telecasting Tribeca Film movies every Friday from June through September.
The inaugural edition of our summer movie series Tribeca Film Presents continues this Friday at 10:00 p.m. on MSG Network with Newlyweds, writer-actor-filmmaker Edward Burns' 2011 marital comedy.
Chances are, you know Burns as the requisite working actor who played the hothead in Saving Private Ryan and has popped up in a whole host of miscellaneous midrange, mainstream dramas and comedies over the past twenty years. Modern-day audiences, however, might not be familiar with Burns' prolific reputation as a Queens-born indie auteur, who came to prominence in the mid-nineties with fraternal New York romcoms like The Brothers McMullen and She's the One, which featured Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, and Amanda Peet. (How's that for a nineties flashback?) Burns' productive career behind the helm has transitioned into the aughts with a bevy of more small-scale, city-dwelling indie films like Sidewalks of New York, Purple Violets, The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, and this week's Tribeca-set Newlyweds.
Burns' tenth film follows Buzzy (Burns) and Katie (Masters of Sex's charmingly jilted wife Caitlin FitzGerald), two newlyweds whose fledgling marital bliss is turned on its head by the emotional baggage of their impossible friends and free-loading family.
Be sure to tune in this Friday (or — more likely — set the DVR) for a pleasing homegrown comedy from a local filmmaker who's survived every wave, sub-wave, and passing phase of the past twenty years of indie cinema to keep churning out movies with dedication and delight.
