Working Actor: Where You've Seen Juno Temple Before

With over two dozen screen credits in a scant seven-year career, Juno Temple is certainly working towards a world -- particularly an indie film world -- where it is increasingly difficult not to know her by name. But her steadfast adherence to not only indies but relatively transgressive indies has made her still somewhat elusive. You've seen her before, for sure. Or maybe you should seek her out more. Either way, we offer a primer on her career highlights so far.

You've Most Likely Seen Her In ...
While Temple has stayed steadfastly on the indie circuit, for the most part, her breakthrough role came in the crossover costume drama Atonement. Despite the glitzy pedigree of stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy -- and the nomination-garnering breakthrough of Saoirse Ronan -- Temple made an impact as the bratty friend who found herself victimized by the also-breaking-through Benedict Cumberbatch. It's a plot point that sets the whole story in motion, and it set the template for Temple to wallow in uncomfortable, often problematic sexuality.

Unless You've Really Been Paying Attention, in Which Case You Remember Her From ...
Last year's sweaty, unpleasant, largely praised Tracy Letts adaptation, Killer Joe. Director William Friedkin cast Temple as another underaged sex object, once again putting the audience in the uncomfortable position of watching Temple being led around by yet another creepy guy, though of course all in service to a greater vision (and to Matthew McConaughey's Year of Critical Praise).

"Wait, So She's That Girl From ..."
A quick tour through Temple's recent screen work will lead you to some fairly interesting -- and under-publicized -- indies. She played a teenage runaway in the unexpectedly sweet-hearted Dirty Girl, a mystery girl in Gregg Araki's completely insane Kaboom!, and in The Brass Teapot, one-half of a couple who discovers a mystery object that makes them money whenever they harm themselves. Safe to say, Temple hasn't exactly signed herself up for a succession of same-old, same-old.

You Can Also Go Back and Spot Her In ...
She's in it ever so briefly, but The Dark Knight Rises features Temple in a small role as Selina Kyle's street-urchin pal. Also, if you look back to before her Atonement break, she had joined the ensembles of The Other Boleyn Girl and Notes on a Scandal.

Perhaps You Were One Of The Few People To See Year One, In Which Case...
You will remember Temple as Michael Cera's prehistoric caveperson girlfriend in that film. You probably didn't, though.

Where You Can Find Her Now ...
Temple's career theme of grimy, transgressive sexuality and power imbalances therein continues with her supporting role in Lovelace, a biopic of porn actress Linda Lovelace. Whether she's poised to make the jump to more mainstream efforts or whether she's happy making more dangerous films on the fringe remains to be seen.
