"Patang" Director Passes Away at 42

A highlight at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, Patang (The Kite), the debut from director Prashant Bhargava, gave fest-goers an all-access look at India’s biggest kite-flying event, and how, over the course of the film, the outdoor celebration unifies the impoverished city of Ahmedabad. Screened as part of TFF's main narrative competition, Patang marked the arrival of a promising new talent.

Today, four years after Patang’s TFF premiere, the film community mourns the loss of that talent. Last Friday, Bhargava passed away in Manhattan. The cause of death, per his sister, was cardiac arrest, stemming from Bhargava’s history of heart disease. He was 42 years old.

Tribeca sends its deepest condolences to Bhargava’s friends and family. The New York Times put together an in-depth and first-class obit yesterday, which you can read here.
