The NY Portuguese Short Film Festival, or NYPSFF, was organized for the first time in June 2011, the first-ever Portuguese short film festival in the United States. Now we are back with the second edition and even more Portuguese short films. The 2012 festival showcases the best work of a new generation of Portuguese filmmakers, and you can be part of it. On June 1, Arte Institute will open the 2012 edition of the NYPSFF with two nights of screenings at Tribeca Cinemas in New York, while also playing simultaneously in Lisbon and Porto.

The first NYPSFF edition was an incredible journey; we took the festival from New York to Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro. Now back in New York for the second edition, we will screen 14 short movies selected by a high-level judging panel composed of film experts from the United States and Portugal. From Diego Costa Amarante’s narrative Down Here, which follows a traditional grandmother who decides to embrace her long-hidden passions, to Pedro Lino and Luis Da Matta Almeida’s animated short The Tortoise, in which a man quite sure of himself begins to question things after discovering an animal that he’s never seen before, the festival showcases fiction, animation and documentary short films that run deep, express emotions and offer a smile.

The festival is part of Arte Institute’s Contemporary Art Summer Season 2012, a program offering cultural events in New York, including the exhibition I Love You, Oh, You Pay My Rent, by Sandro Resende and Paulo Romão Brás; a lecture with acclaimed Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto; a concert by New Jersey local band At a Distance; and the Summer Nights Series at Union Square Park.
