Catch the Nas-Produced Breakdancing Doc SHAKE THE DUST This Weekend in NYC
Hip-hop is all about one thing right now: the slowly developing and, so far, mostly one-sided beef between Drake and Meek Mill. At worst, it's a dull modern-day answer to the great rap feuds of old, from Canibus vs. LL Cool J to Ice Cube vs. Common and Nas vs. Jay Z; at best, though, it’s an example of how some hip-hop institutions will never lose their appeal. In this case, it’s the competitive sport of battle-rapping.
In the case of the new documentary Shake the Dust, it’s the timeless art of breakdancing. Directed by Adam Sjöberg, Shake the Dust proves that B-boys and B-girls are just as relevant today as they were back in the ’80s, when O.G.'s like Crazy Legs and the Rock Steady Crew would show their supreme skills in front of energetic crowds in Harlem and the Bronx. Just because guys like Drake and Meek Mill aren’t spinning on their backs atop flattened cardboard slabs, that doesn’t mean breakdancing is old news. Sjöberg traveled to Colombia, Cambodia, Yemen and Uganda to document how hip-hop’s most loose-limbed element has inspired millions of youngsters in ghettoes all around the world. He even got Nas to join the project as an executive producer.
Here’s your chance to see why Nas cosigned Sjöberg’s work. Shake the Dust will have two special screenings this weekend at Maysles Cinema: Saturday at 7:30 p.m., including a Q7A with Adam Sjöberg, and Sunday night at 7:30 p.m., once again with a Q&A but moderated by hip-hop icon Fab 5 Freddy. Buy tickets for either screening here.
Or, if you act fast enough, you can grab free tickets by heading here and using the promo code "stdmc" while checking out.
