Two Documentary Shorts from 2015 Tribeca Film Festival Make Academy Awards Shortlist
Two of the most acclaimed films from the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival gain the Academy's attention.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the ten films shortlisted for the Documentary Short Subject Award, including two immensely powerful and widely-celebrated 2015 Tribeca Film Festival world premieres.
David Darg's Body Team 12, which was produced by RYOT Films, Vulcan Films, and executive producer Olivia Wilde and nabbed the Best Documentary Short prize at this past year's Festival, documents the grisly and dangerous efforts of Ebola workers in West Africa who are tasked with collecting dead bodies.
Ann Shin's My Enemy, My Brother tells the story of Najah, a drafted Iraqi soldier with a wife and child, and Zahed, the Iranian boy who ran away from home to join the army and risked his life to save Najah on the battlefield. The film chronicles the comrades' chance reunion in Canada some twenty-five years after surviving brutal warfare.
The ten-wide list, which was culled from 74 entries, also includes:
50 Feet from Syria (Dir. Skye Fitzgerald)
Chau, beyond the lines (Dir. Courtney Marsh)
Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah (Dir. Adam Benzine)
A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (Prod. SOC Films)
Last Day of Freedom (Dirs. Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman)
Minerita (Dir.Raúl de la Fuente)
Starting Point (Dir. Michał Szcześniak)
The Testimony (Dir. Vanessa Block)
Five nominees will be chosen from these films, which were chosen by voters from the Academy's documentary branch, who will also nominate the final five. Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 14th, 2016.
