New York Premiere
An Incomplete History of the Travelogue, 1925
Shorts in Competition: Documentary
| USA | 9 MINUTES | EnglishDocumentary
This film subverts the form of amateur ethnography to reflect upon our cultural anxiety and fascination with race, evolution, and civilization. This lyrical essay film captures the spirit of excess and adventure embodied by The Great Gatsby (published in 1925) in fragments from home movies of a wealthy American family abroad in Europe and North Africa-illuminating truth as something that is historically fleeting.
