CROSS BRONX

In this raw coming-of-age drama, four childhood friends in their last year of high school -- a wrestler, a baseball star, an aspiring mobster, and an artist -- leave suburban Westchester behind and move in together, in a run-down basement apartment in the Bronx. Each of the protagonists faces unexpected challenges in this new environment. The wrestler succumbs to the pressure of his buddies, which makes him unable to compete; the baseball player might not have what it takes to make it in the minors; the wannabe mobster tries to prove himself to his demanding father; and the artist gets into a personal and professional relationship with an upstairs neighbor despite their age difference. Director Larry Golin has created a refreshingly realistic portrait of boys becoming men on the streets of New York City, away from the prying eyes of their parents. The film's gritty tone exemplifies the struggles these young people face as they navigate the troublesome terrain of young adulthood, a minefield of friendships, family obligations, and personal ambitions.
