Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has one of the most distinctly recognizable visual styles in cinema today. With Nelson George he discusses creating work which merges both classic and modern worlds through films from The Great Gatsby to Moulin Rouge.

Baz Luhrmann
Born in Sydney, Australia, Baz Luhrmann has captured the popular and critical imagination with a diverse range of award-winning projects in film, opera, theatre, and music. Currently Luhrmann is writing, producing, and directing The Get Down, an original series for Netflix premiering in 2016, set in 1970s New York City, and told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city and the world, forever. Earlier works include the Oscar® winning 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (2013), Australia (2008), the Oscar® winning Moulin Rouge! (2001), William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Strictly Ballroom (1992).

Nelson George
Nelson George is the author of groundbreaking histories of African American music, including Where did our love go: the Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound and Hip Hop America. George has directed the HBO film Life Support and A Ballerina's Tale about the career of Misty Copeland. He is a writer/producer on the Netflix series The Get Down, premiering in August.
