TRIBECA TALKS: TIME'S UP EVENT

In response to the growing national movement, Tribeca Film Festival has partnered with TIME’S UP to host a day of conversations with the women who are playing a pivotal role in raising awareness about inequality in the workplace. Activists, storytellers, business leaders, filmmakers, lawyers, media figures, and more share their stories and seek next steps to establish the parameters for lasting change across industries and the pay spectrum.

PANELISTS

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore is an Academy Award and Emmy winning actor, and the first American woman to be awarded top acting prizes at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice film festivals. Julianne also is a NY-Times bestselling author, for her children’s book series Freckleface Strawberry. She is on the Advisory Council of The Children's Health Fund, a supporter of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, and in 2015, became founding chair of the Everytown for Gun Safety Creative Council, a creative community established to help amplify the movement to end gun violence in America. Whoopi Goldberg is one of a very elite group of artists who have won the Grammy, the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, the Emmy and a Tony. She is also a prolific producer and is well-known around the world for her many humanitarian endeavors. Born and raised in New York City, she performed in San Diego and the Bay Area with the Blake Street Hawkeyes theatre troupe. It was there that she created the characters which became The Spook Show and evolved into her hit Broadway show, Grammy Award-winning album and the HBO special that helped launch her career.

Haifaa Al-Mansour

Haifaa Al-Mansour

Haifaa al-Mansour is the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia and is regarded as one of its most significant cinematic figures. She studied comparative literature at the American University in Cairo and completed a Master’s degree from the University of Sydney. The success of her 2005 documentary Women Without Shadows influenced a new wave of Saudi filmmakers and made the issue of opening cinemas in the Kingdom front-page news. Wadjda, al-Mansour’s feature debut, is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first by a female director. The film received wide critical acclaim after its premiere at the 2012 Venice Film Festival. She is currently working on post-production on her latest film, Nappily Ever After, starring Sanaa Lathan. Her film Mary Shelley starring Elle Fanning and Douglas Booth will also come out later this year. Al-Mansour is the first artist from the Arabian Gulf region to be invited to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science.

Tarana Burke

Tarana has worked in social justice and Black arts and culture for more than 25 years. Her long and varied professional career started in Selma, AL where she worked with such organizations as the 21st century Youth Leadership Movement and the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute. Tarana is passionate about social justice and has made a lifelong commitment to serving the causes of people of color and marginalized groups with a particular focus on young women and girls. She has done organizing work from the Deep South to the east coast dealing with issues ranging from economic justice to police brutality. In 2003 she turned her focus to young women of color and co-founded Jandayi Aza, an African centered rites of Passage program for girls, which evolved into the creation of her non-profit Just Be, Inc., which has served hundreds of girls around the country through unique programming and workshops. Through the work of Just be, Tarana started the ‘me too.’ Movement, a campaign using the idea of “empowerment through empathy” to help young women of color who are survivors of sexual abuse, assault and exploitation.

Agunda Okeyo is a writer, producer, organizer, and activist born in Nairobi and raised between New York City and the Kenyan capital. She has called NYC home for more than 20 years and proudly considers herself a Pan-African New Yorker. A widely-published author, Okeyo understands and writes from a global perspective about race, gender, politics, culture, comedy, and more. Okeyo has been featured as a rising producer and activist in numerous publications, and is lauded for her ongoing production called Sisters of Comedy housed at Carolines on Broadway, which is the only and longest running black women centered showcase at any of the top comedy clubs in NYC.

Amani created and starred in Teen Vogue and MuslimGirl.com’s collaborative #AskAMuslimGirl webseries, which won a Webby Award in 2017, and starred in the 2017 Emmy-nominated production The Secret Life of Muslims Her first book, Muslim Girl: A Coming of Age, was published with Simon & Schuster in October 2016 and selected as an Editor’s Pick on The New York Times Bestsellers List.

Sebastian Tomich was named global head of Advertising and Marketing Solutions at The New York Times in November 2017. Previously, Tomich was senior vice president of Advertising and Innovation, starting in April 2015. Saru Jayaraman

Saru Jayaraman is the Co-Founder and President of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United) and Director of the Food Labor Research Center at University of California, Berkeley. After 9/11, together with displaced World Trade Center workers, she co-founded ROC, which now has more than 30,000 worker members, 500 employer partners, and 23,000 consumer members in a dozen states nationwide. Saru is a graduate of Yale Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She was listed in CNN’s “Top10 Visionary Women” and recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House in 2014, and a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2015. Saru authored Behind the Kitchen Door (Cornell University Press, 2013), a national bestseller, and most recently Forked: A New Standard for American Dining (Oxford University Press, 2016).

She is a Latinx who grew up in CA.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. Currently in her second term, she was sworn into office in 2013 and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position, having devoted her career to issues of human rights, equality and social justice. Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka has worked in government and civil society, and with the private sector, and was actively involved in the struggle to end apartheid in her home country of South Africa. From 2005 to 2008, Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka served as Deputy President of South Africa. A longtime champion of women’s rights, she is affiliated with several organizations devoted to education, women’s empowerment and gender equality.

Julia Rybak is the Director of Organizing at the Hotel Trades Council, the union representing over 35,000 hotel, restaurant and gaming workers in New York State and Northern New Jersey. Julia joined HTC in 2008 to help build the union’s political power through membership training and mobilization. Since then, HTC has become one of the most politically powerful unions in New York. An accomplished organizer, Julia has taken members out on strike, and organized numerous non-union hotels and casinos both through card check neutrality and NLRB elections, and worked on contract negotiations. Julia is proud to work for HTC, a vibrant and militant union made up of people from across the world. Julia is particularly proud that HTC’s contracts, which are the strongest in the world for hotel workers, empower women, people of colour and immigrant members and protect them in their workplace with groundbreaking contractual language such as ‘panic buttons.’ Originally from Minnesota, prior to joining HTC Julia worked as a community organizer for TakeAction Minnesota and Home Line, a tenant advocacy organization. When she is not organizing, she can be found at Pat Hall’s Afro-Caribbean dance class.

For more than three decades, the fiercely independent shop has been telling beautiful, provocative stories and setting the bar for creativity. Colleen is leading the vision for the agency's future, where one avenue of evolution and growth will be defined by a deeper, more extensive set of creative chops. In May of 2017, Colleen was named one of Fast Company's 100 most creative people in business, a testament to her creative commitment in leadership.

Captain Danielle Herzlich is a graduate of Boston College, and received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Theology. Upon graduation, she commissioned as an Adjutant General Corp Officer in the United States Army in 2011. She currently serves as the Victim Advocate for New Jersey’s National Guard Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program. Danielle and her husband Mark Herzlich (NFL New York Giants Linebacker), serve on the National Board of Directors of the Joyful Heart Foundation and A Call To Men, both organizations devote their efforts to ending domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. Together, Danielle and Mark travel around the country speaking at schools, fortune 500 companies, churches, and military installations, on healthy relationships and redefining healthy masculinity. Danielle currently resides in New Jersey with her husband, and their 2 English bulldogs. They are expecting their first child in May 2018.

Sofie Whitney is a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, and a survivor of the shooting on February 14th. She is one of the student members and organizers of the March for our Lives and #NeverAgain movements that started after the tragedy. She has made it her number one priority to advocate for gun safety and wants to encourage her generation and all others to stay active and vote.

Rachel Tuchman

Rachel Tuchman is an associate at Kaplan and Co LLP. She is the lead associate on a defamation lawsuit representing a woman sued by Brett Ratner, famed Hollywood producer, for speaking out and sharing her #MeToo story. Through this work, Rachel has been thrilled to help launch the Times Up Legal Defense Fund to help fund litigation supporting individuals speaking up about sexual harassment and gender misconduct. Rachel currently serves as co-chair of the Law and Policy Working Group for Time's Up New York.

Nina Shaw is a founding partner in the entertainment law firm of Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano. Her practice is in the television, motion picture, and live stage area. A native New Yorker, Nina was born and raised in Harlem and The Bronx, educated in the New York City public school system and is a graduate of Barnard College and Columbia Law School. Nina has a long-standing commitment to the education of children and an advocate for the education of girls and women. Nina is among the founding organizers of Time’s Up.

Amber Tamblyn is an Emmy, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award-nominated actress. She recently wrote and directed the feature film, Paint it Black. She also reviews books of poetry by women for Bust Magazine and is a contributing writer for The New York Times.

Roberta (Robbie) Kaplan, founding partner of Kaplan & Company, LLP, represented Edith Windsor in the landmark case of United States v. Windsor. Robbie is one of the co-founders of the #TimesUp Legal Defense Fund and is currently representing Melanie Kohler, a woman who Hollywood producer, Brett Ratner, sued for defamation after she shared her #MeToo story. Robbie's firm is also currently suing more than two dozen Neo-Nazis and white supremacists who coordinated the violence that took place in Charlottesville, VA in August 2017.

Ms. Goss Graves has served in numerous roles at the National Women’s Law Center for more than a decade and has a distinguished track record working across a broad set of issues central to women’s lives—including income security, health and reproductive rights, education access, and workplace justice. Ms. Goss Graves is currently overseeing the Center’s administration of the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which connects those who experience sexual misconduct including assault, harassment, abuse and related retaliation in the workplace or in trying to advance their careers with legal and public relations assistance.

She also sits on the board of directors of Snap Inc and is the executive producer of ABC Freeform’s scripted drama, The Bold Type. In addition to her role with Hearst Magazines, Coles has recently published a book Love Rules with HarperCollins on relationships in the digital age. She lives in Manhattan and sits on the board of Women Entrepreneurs New York City, an initiative to expand female entrepreneurship, with a focus on underserved women and communities.

Wade Davis is a former NFL player, public speaker, and corporate inclusion and cultural advisor on gender, race and equality. He consults for the NFL, NHL, and Google and advises Fortune 500 companies on building inclusive cultures.Wade launched initiatives with Planned Parenthood and the Ms. Foundation, and is a UN Women Global Champion for Innovation.Wade built a Men’s Gender Equality training to engage, educate and provide men with tools to be gender equality advocates and was a national surrogate for President Obama. Wade has taught at NYU and Rutgers, and received an honorary Doctor of Public Service from Northeastern University.
