World Premiere: Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto
Live Events
| 60 MINUTESWhat happens when a place on the verge of collapse tries to reinvent itself? How much will it cost? Who will pay the price? Former Marketplace and KCRW reporter David Weinberg spent years following one city in the middle of California’s Mojave desert as it tried to transform itself from a city known for its prisons… to a city of pot. Welcome to Adelanto, the city with unlimited possibilities -- in NYC for one night only at Tribeca. Hear more from host David Weinberg, Crooked co-founder and panel moderator Jon Favreau and special guests, City of Adelanto Honorable Councilwoman Stevevonna Evans, and Investigative Reporter Amanda Chicago Lewis.

Stevevonna Evans
A freshman to politics, Stevevonna Evans took on her hometown of Adelanto, California in November 2018 to win a City Council seat. Stevevonna actively participates in organizations such as the Southern California Black Chamber of Commerce High Desert Chapter, where she serves as the Vice President, the Regional steering committee and the grant committee for the Interagency Council on Homelessness. Even in those meritorious feats, her biggest accomplishment was her successful election as the first African American woman to sit on the Adelanto City Council. She wholeheartedly believes we must possess a willingness to be the change we want to see.
To date, her proudest feat was spearheading the repeal of the discriminatory Crime Free Housing ordinance, convincing the Council to declare racism a public health crisis and working with other community leaders and residents to put those words to action by creating an action plan to combat racism and ensure diversity and inclusion. In exchange for the resident's faith in her, she has committed herself to be their voice. Unapologetically, she has no qualms letting others know how blessed she has been to have the support of her residents and boldly declares the honor to serve them and truly make Adelanto the City with unlimited possibilities.
In addition to that she’s a mother, business owner, Community Health Worker and social justice activists. Stevevonna uses her talents to educate her community on money and finance, giving them access to information normally kept away from them. Stevevonna is truly committed to serving the community in any capacity they need. She has partnered with two other organizations to bring much needed nutritious foods to the most underserved part of Adelanto every month for since the start of 2023. Her dedication to being the change continues even now that she is no longer an elected official.
