ESPN Films Offers "30 for 30 Film Favorites Collection"

Pay attention, jocks and movie lovers! Two Tribeca favorites, “Catching Hell” and “The Two Escobars,” will be included in ESPN’s 30 for 30 Film Favorites Collection, available this month. New season starts October 2!

ESPN Films Offers "30 for 30 Film Favorites Collection"

Coming September 25, ESPN Home Entertainment and Team Marketing will release the 30 for 30 Film Favorites Collection. Conveniently, the DVD is available for purchase just prior to the return of the widely acclaimed 30 for 30 series on ESPN next month. The collection will appeal to sports enthusiasts and film fans alike, providing as it does well crafted films based on many of the most riveting sports stories of the past 30 years.

Bonus: The Film Favorites include celebrated documentaries from TFF alums Alex Gibney (Catching Hell) and Jeff and Michael Zimbalist (The Two Escobars), both of which celebrated their premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.

In Catching Hell, Academy Award®-winning documentarian Gibney probes the tricky subject of sports curses and scapegoats, focusing on Chicago Cubs left fielder Moises Alou’s inability to catch a crucial foul ball, a gaffe that robbed the star-crossed Cubbies of a chance to go to the World series in 2003.

The Zimbalist brothers’ The Two Escobars follows the oddly parallel stories of beloved Columbian soccer star, Andrés Escobar and drug baron, Pablo Escobar, who were united by their mutual love of soccer.

The dynamic connection between ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 series, which has breathed new life into the sports documentary genre, and the Tribeca Film Festival seems inevitable, given Tribeca’s commitment to cutting edge programming. Sponsored by Time Warner Cable, the TFF/ESPN Sports Film Festival has become a popular event for NYC film fans. Not surprisingly, Broke, the latest doc by Billy Corben, premiered at TFF 2012 and will kick off the new season of 30 for 30 on October 2. Another TFF 2012 premiere, Benji, directed by Coodie and Chike, will air October 23.

There’s no better way to gear up for the new season of this revolutionary series than by owning the six-disc ESPN 30 for 30 Film Favorites Collection and re-watching twelve of the series’ most popular titles, including The U, Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks, and The Best That Never Was. As an added bonus, the set includes the 30 for 30 short, Here Now, never before available on DVD, which follows baseball legend Pete Rose and his life today. Other entries in the Collection deal with topics ranging from Magic Johnson’s historic announcement of his diagnosis with HIV to the notorious Miami Hurricanes’ football team in the ’80s and ’90s.
