Black Filmmakers Unite on Twitter for Inspirational "Rebel-A-Thon"
With last year’s Oscar-nominated Selma, Ava DuVernay solidified herself as a leader among black filmmakers working in both the independent and studio scenes, as few as there are, sadly, in the latter. Always outspoken and constantly inspirational, she’s been the lynchpin for much-needed discussions about the need for equality with gender and race in Hollywood. And for her latest power move, DuVernay proved to be a social media leader, too.
Amidst all of the critical acclaim and headlines, one fact about DuVernay has been largely overlooked: she’s had her own distribution label, the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement, for years now. The AFFRM is now getting stronger, thanks to its new distribution label, Array, and to help promote the label, raise cash and also rally her fellow black filmmakers in a major public setting, DuVernay spearheaded a “Rebel-A-Thon” on Twitter all day yesterday. Under the hashtag #ARRAY, DuVernay and 40 black directors discussed the business and offered exclusive tidbits about their upcoming projects, in a day-long forum that included insights from Justin Simien (Dear White People), Malcolm D. Lee (the Best Man movies) and Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and Tyler Perry. Click through the gallery above for a sampling of the day's tweets.
The almighty Oprah Winfrey even chimed in after someone told Perry that never see themselves in his movies, tweeting, "That's the beauty of multiple and diverse storytelling. No one story fits all."
