At their most provocative, documentaries place viewers into worlds they'd otherwise never enter because, well, they're either not prepared to do so or shouldn't enter in the first place. (T)ERROR, the award-winning film from co-directors Lyric R. Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe, dangerously and intensely exemplifies that sentiment.

An unprecedented on-the-ground exploration of the FBI's counterterrorism operation, (T)ERROR, which screened at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and was supported by Tribeca Film Institute's filmmaker All Access Program , places viewers into the previously impenetrable arena of governmental surveillance. It does so through the eyes of Saeed "Shariff" Torres, a former Black Panther who works as an FBI informant. An ex-con, Torres receives minimum wage to infiltrate the lives of suspected stateside Al Qaeda members—a job that, yes, seems like it's worth a lot more than the same pay earned by teenagers working in retail stores. Cabral and Sutcliffe’s film looks at that bitter reality, racial profiling and the violation of basic freedoms as Torres zones in on a Muslim suspect living in a nearby Pittsburgh apartment.

(T)ERROR unfolds like a classic cat-and-mouse thriller, except this isn't a "movie." It’s real life. The filmmakers' investigation into how the government can probe the interior lives of anyone and everyone is equally startling and fascinating.

That is, if you're ever able to see the film. Obviously the FBI doesn't welcome cameras into something as high-priority as their counterterrorism unit, so what Cabral and Sutcliffe pulled off is truly next-level. It also hasn't made the powers that be very happy, nor has it been financially pleasant. Cabral, Sutcliffe and the rest of their crew are in the red, due to the production's "serious legal expenses and insurance costs." Now, (T)ERROR is at risk of never seeing an official theatrical release, which is why Cabral and Sutcliffe have turned to Kickstarter for assistance.

Through the film's crowdfunding campaign, they'll hopefully be able to share their incredibly unique and eye-opening film with the world. Hollywood is beginning to take notice: Mark Ruffalo, a.k.a. The Avengers' Bruce "Hulk" Banner, who's also an outspoken social activist, has shown love to (T)ERROR via Twitter:

The campaign ends next Thursday, September 3, at 12:20 a.m. EST. With less than a week left, the Kickstarter is close to its targeted $60,000 goal, but it can use some more help.
