Free “Secret Screening” this Saturday at Rockaway Beach

As a thank you to Sandy volunteers, our second installment of our screening series with the Rockaway Beach Surf Club is this Saturday, September 21. The theme? Surfers, of course!

Free “Secret Screening” this Saturday at Rockaway Beach

It’s hard to believe that almost a year later we’re still feeling the effects of Hurricane Sandy. One of the areas hit the hardest was, of course, the Rockaway Beach. After the storm, thousands of New Yorkers and volunteers from other states travelled to Queens to help by donating supplies and labor to members of the community still reeling from the effects of the storm.

The Rockaway Beach Surf Club was seriously damaged in Hurricane Sandy, but its founders, Brandon D’Leo, Bradach Walsh, and Beth Perkins, joined other organizers and turned it into a hub for the distribution of supplies and as a gathering point for volunteers who were clearing wreckage from the 700 houses in the surrounding neighborhood damaged by the storm.

To celebrate the community and thank those who came out to volunteer post-Sandy, the RBSC also teamed up with the Tribeca Film Festival for a three-part free “secret” screening of films that premiered at TFF in the past.

This Saturday, September 21, we hope you’ll join us for the second free secret screening in our series. The festivities will start at 4PM and go to 12AM with the film screening at sundown. This month’s theme is surfers and there’s no better place in NYC to celebrate. New York surfing legends, including Rusty Miller (who will also do a book signing), will be in attendance to take part in all the fun. There will also be a vintage surf photography and surfboard exhibit.

Before the secret screening, attendees will get a special bonus! Talk Story: The History of New York Surfing, a nifty short on surfing in the Big Apple, will play before the featured screening. So bring your friends, enjoy some food and drinks from local vendors, and get ready to hang ten this Saturday at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club.
