The TFF 2011 Doc ‘Off The Rez’ Is Now On iTunes & VOD
Produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, this moving film follows one Native American girl as she works to earn a basketball scholarship
Jonathan Hocks’s fascinating documentary, Off the Rez, was a hit with audiences when it first premiered back at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.
The film centers on Shoni Schimmel, a high-school junior living on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. Shoni dreams of receiving a college scholarship to play basketball, but she realizes that goal will be impossible to achieve while she lives on the reservation. To the disapproval of the community, Shoni’s mother, Ceci Moses, takes a job coaching basketball in Portland, a decision that forever changes the course of their lives. This absorbing documentary follows Shoni and her family during her senior year and explores the struggle the mother and daughter face to stay true to their Native American roots while striving for success, both on and off the court.
See Off the Rex again or for the first time when the film hits iTunes and VOD on Friday, January 24.
