Last October, Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast and its surrounding areas. Almost a year later, we are still feeling the effects. Help your fellow New Yorker today or in the long-term by participating in volunteer events across the five boroughs.

Lighting the Shore
Tuesday, October, 29th
Staten Island and New Jersey

The Staten Island Community and Interfaith Long-Term Recovery Organization will form a chain of lights along the shoreline where they will reach into New Jersey as part of the "Light the Shore" vigil ceremony.  In addition to Light the Shore, the organizations will be hosting other events that evening. 
 

Good news for A riders in Rockaways and Howard Beach and R riders in Brooklyn: Fares suspended all day Tuesday for Sandy anniversary.

MTA Offering Free Subway Fares on Select Lines 
Tuesday, October 29th
Brooklyn and Queens 

In remembrance of Hurricane Sunday, the MTA will waive fares all day on the A and R lines for those impacted in the Rockaways and Brooklyn.

This event includes a panel about those who continue to struggle one year after Sandy as well as volunteers from Sandy Storyline who have gathered documentaries, photographs, and stories from New Yorkers affected by the storm.

The Weinstein Company will be releasing their documentary based on the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert, 12-12-12, which raised over $50 million in one night for those effected by the tragedy of the storm. All profits from the documentary will go to the Robin Hood Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. Check on the Ziegfeld website for updates and further details.

The Restore Yana Project
Far Rockaways

YANA, which stands for You Are Never Alone, started as an organization dedicated to bringing jobs and eduacation to an area suffering from economic hardship.  After the storm, YANA has been working to help the area recover from devastation and get back on its feet as an organization.  Sponsored by Occupy Sandy, this project is in need of in-kind donations, volunteers, and funds. 

FLO Solutions for Disaster Relief
Greater NYC Area

FLO Solutions, sponsored by Occupy Sandy, is in need of technologically-sound individuals (designers, developers, etc.) who are able to help volunteer efforts get their word out through websites and social media outlets.  

Rockaway Wildfire
Far Rockaways

Sponsored by Occupy Sandy, this project is looking for permanent members to unite and rebuild the Rockaway communities destroyed by the storm. To donate or volunteer, please contact rockawaywildfire@gmail.com
