The fairy-tales-and-monsters ostensible franchise-starter Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Arterton played Gretel to Jeremy Renner's Hansel, and she managed to look pretty badass while dispatching CGI witches (and one very real Famke Janssen).

Unless You've Really Been Paying Attention, in Which Case You Remember Her From ...
Several very British films which earned Arterton some across-the-pond recognition, although in very different genres and temperaments. In Tamara Drewe, Arterton enchants the men of a small English writer's retreat, while in the darker The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Arterton played an abductee subjected to terrible horrors. Arterton is also one of the many British actresses to come from the St. Trinian's star-churning machine, along with Lena Headey, Juno Temple, and Lucy Punch.

In America, at least before Hansel and Gretel and Famke and Spike came along, Arterton was best known for her performances in a pair of sand-blasted blockbusters where she played what amounted to the female lead: as Tamina in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and as Io in Clash of the Titans.
