2023 Expressions of Black Freedom

Celebrate Juneteenth At #Tribeca2023

sponsored by Indeed, is an evolution of our Juneteenth program that gives a curated-themed look at stories that embody what it means to be free. The goal was to move beyond programming the Black experience, the programming and curating within it. This year’s theme is Black Music which ties into our celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop. These story selections use Black Music as a guiding creative tool to create tributes to what Black Freedom looks like, both individually and ultimately for the collective. From talks with artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Billy Porter about their journey within the music industry and the ways that it has enabled them to pivot to other storytelling mediums, to New York immigrant stories where music served as a community builder in FOR KHADIJA and BAD LIKE BROOKLYN DANCEHALL. To a curated shorts program inspired by the song, SAY IT LOUD. The value of a curated program within our larger offerings of stories that touch on the Black experience is to showcase the variety of experiences and modes of expression the diaspora has.

The focus on Black Music as the theme for this year allows for us to also celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, in our shared birthplace, New York City. To help us craft our celebration, we brought in a curator-in-residence, Fab 5 Freddy.

The full program combines films, immersive experiences, panels and events.

There is a difference between saying that all are welcome and a space that was built with you in mind. All are welcome has an air of tolerance that no longer feels enough. The lounge programs this year were built with the intention of moving beyond just saying all are welcome and, instead, focused on what does it means to navigate the world of storytelling and its future through the lens of those that have been historically excluded. In this world of storytellers that we exist in, how do we build a more inclusive, not just tolerant, version of what’s to come. Part of that work is by partnering with organizations that are already doing the work. We’ve invited co-hosts for many of our masterclasses and lounge programs to help amplify the work of the many stakeholders in the industry. Some of those collaborators are Blackhouse, Diverse Representation, GLAAD, the National Museum of the American Indian, Missing Movies, and the South Asian House, and we invite many more to help us co-host screenings.
