5 Exciting Things To Take Away from ‘The Counselor’ Teaser

A teaser trailer for Ridley Scott’s ‘The Counselor’ hit the web this morning, and it’s glorious. Just glorious.

5 Exciting Things To Take Away from ‘The Counselor’ Teaser

If your definition of a friend is someone who would die for you...you don't have any friends.

Not much is known about The Counselor, Ridley Scott’s upcoming film, but the internet collectively gasped this morning when a teaser trailer for the long-awaited film suddenly appeared. With a script penned by famed author Cormac McCarthy, the film centers on a lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who gets involved in a drug trafficking scheme involving a number of  unsavory characters and soon finds himself in way over his head.

Since there is hardly any dialogue in the teaser, we have to draw our own conclusions from the little that we already know about the project. So forgive us for being speculative. Led by Fassbender, the supporting cast is quite impressive: Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

While they are the only actors shown in the trailer, IMDB reveals that John Leguizamo, Rosie Perez, Goran Visnjic and Natalie Dormer will also appear in the The Counselor, which will undoubtedly be one of the most anticipated films to be released this coming fall. Here are five reasons not to curb your enthusiasm:

Cormac McCarthy’s First Original Screenplay

The literary works of Cormac McCarthy are well known to moviegoers. From All The Pretty Horses to No Country for Old Men to The Road, McCarthy is as versatile as he is talented. The Counselor appears to be right in his wheelhouse with its obvious themes of desperate men, violence, the West and the corruption of morality. This is first script that the author has written explicitly intended for the big screen. He previously adapted his own book, The Sunset Limited, for an HBO TV movie.

The Return of Cameron Diaz

From the moment we first saw her in The Mask, we fell hard for Cameron Diaz. Even though she’s been nominated for four Golden Globes, people still tend to underestimate her talent. She hasn’t had a bona fide hit in a while (though we have a soft spot for Bad Teacher), but Diaz looks amazing in The Counselor. Oozing beauty and power, she also appears to convey a hint of menace  that intrigues us. We’ll have to wait until the end of October to find out more.

Cheetah Motif

Someone has a pet Cheetah in this movie and we can’t wait to see which character claims this exotic animal that symbolizes strength and speed. We assume that the owner is also a predator, which may explain why Cameron Diaz appears to be slinking up the hood of a car in a cheetah print dress. Bardem doesn’t stand a chance.

Second Pairing of Ridley Scott and Dariusz Wolski

Yes, we know Prometheus was dreadful. We’re not afraid to admit it. However, one thing we all can agree on is that its visuals were stunning. Dariusz Wolski, the Polish DP who previously shot the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and Alice in Wonderland, worked well with Scott on the visual storytelling process (just wish the script had exuded the same ingenuity and creativity). We may be jumping ahead here, but the 50 seconds of footage we’ve seen looks incredible.

Fassbender vs. Bardem vs. Pitt

Granted not many details about the script are known, but we can predict where the action is headed: a major showdown involving Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt or some combination of the trio.

Bardem’s crazily spiked hair and Brad Pitt’s greasy ponytail give us the sense that those two are up to no good. We just hope Fassbender makes it through the movie unscathed.
